How do I browse the internet more anonymously?

I thought for a long time that using incognito mode in Google Chrome let me surf the internet anonymously. But a buddy who works at an internet provider company told me that's complete nonsense and even at the ISP level they can see where you're going and who's visiting which sites, even in incognito mode. That kind of bummed me out. So how are you supposed to browse the internet anonymously and more safely?

Millions of people think that when using private browser modes they can surf the internet anonymously and nobody's tracking them. But that's a huge misconception. Maybe some website admins can't see you, but otherwise it's all rubbish. Use different tools. Like a VPN, for instance. It does a much better job of hiding your internet presence.
